SEURAT PROJECT

HP LASERJET 4000 DUPLEX PRINTER OPERATIONS

In order to facilitate the transition to, and operation of, the HP LaserJet 4000 Duplex Printer, I've compiled a set of directions for accomplishing tasks related to the SEURAT project. These instructions assume that the Windows 95 operating system is being used.

Printing a Directory Page

This procedure is used to print a directory page, showing the contents of the printer's storage (Flash DIMM's, for example).

    1. Press the Menu button once. The printer's display now reads "INFORMATION MENU".
    2. Press the Item button five (5) times. The printer's display now reads "PRINT FILE DIRECTORY".
    3. Press the Select button. The file directory page will print.

Initializing the Flash DIMM

This procedure is used to permanently delete all macros from the Flash DIMM in the printer.

    1. Turn the power to the printer off.
    2. Hold down the negative (-) side of the Menu, Item, and Value keys on the printer.
    3. Turn the power to the printer on.
    4. Release all keys when the "INITIALIZING DISK" message appears on the printer's display.
    5. Print a directory page to verify that all macros have been deleted.

Printing Macros from Teleforms

In order to print macros from Teleforms, the HP LaserJet 4000 PCL5e printer driver must be installed on the machine in which Teleforms is installed. Assuming that such a driver is installed, to print macros from Teleforms for the LJ4000 printer:

    1. Select Start => Settings => Printers from the Windows 95 desktop.
    2. Right-click on the HP4000 PCL5e driver; unless it has been renamed, it should be called HP LaserJet 4000 Series PCL 5e.
    3. Select Properties from the pop-up menu.
    4. Select the Details tab.
    5. Note what the settings in the Print to the following port list box are, as you will need to reset them later. In this list box, select "FILE: (Creates a file on disk)".
    6. Press the OK button.
    7. Run Teleforms. Load each form that is to have a macro generated for it. Print the macro as if you were printing normally. You may have to select the specific printer if the LJ4000 PCL5e is not the default print driver. When the print command is executed, you will be prompted to enter a filename. Enter a filename with the extension .PRN.
    8. Repeat step 7 for each of the forms that is to have a macro generated.
    9. When done, return to the printer's properties (steps 2-4) and switch the value of Print to the following port back to the value it had in step 5. Press the OK button to save the printer properties.

Loading Macros onto the Flash DIMM (Using HP Resource Manager)

In order to download PCL macros onto the Flash DIMM in the LJ4000, you will need a software package called HP Resource Manager. The Windows 95 version is available for download here; the Windows NT 4.0 version is available for download here.  (The most recent version can be downloaded from the HP LaserJet 4000 Series website.

For more information, see HP LaserJet 5000 and 4000 Family Printers - Downloading and Printing Macros and Fonts Using Resource Manager on HP's Customer Support website.

Note: Due to a bug in the HP Resource Manager application (which HP is aware of due to our reports to them), macros can only be downloaded to LJ4000 printers with an HP JetDirect 600N internal print server card installed.  We have one such card, an Ethernet version, installed in the LJ4000 in Medical Informatics.  The assumed procedure is that all Flash DIMM chips will be loaded from that printer and deployed to the other LJ4000 printers in YNHH.

Assuming that the HP Resource Manager is installed in a Windows 95/Windows NT 4.0 machine, the HP LaserJet 4000 printer contains an HP JetDirect 600N internal print server card, and there is an established network connection between the PC and the printer, the following steps should be followed to load macros onto the Flash DIMM chip:

    1. Load the HP Resource Manager software on the PC.  This may take a few moments as the software searches for installed printers.
    2. The printer should automatically be detected.  It will show up on the TCP/IP tab of the printers window.  (Currently, for example, the printer shows up listed by its IP address: 130.132.19.241.)
    3. Select File => New Project.  A new project window will appear.
    4. Click on the (+) in front of the Project1 folder in the project window.
    5. Click on the printer in the printers window and drag it to the Printers icon in the project window.  The printer will now appear as a child of the Printers icon, listed by its IP address.
    6. Using the files window, find the directory containing the macros to be loaded to the printer.
    7. Select the files (macros) that you want to download and drag them to the PCL 5 Macros icon in the project window.  All of the selected files will now appear as a child of the PCL 5 Macros icon in the project window, and details about the macros will appear in the right frame of the project window.
    8. The macro ID's can be changed by clicking on them and entering the new value.
    9. Download the macros to the printer by selecting Projects => Update Printers.
    10. Save the project settings before you exit.  The next time macros need to be updated, you can open this project and work from there.
