- Key decision variables are captured as structured data to trigger recommendation code. To allow flexibility for documentation, however, free text is also captured in some areas. PalmAsthma performs calculations (e.g., peak flow rate variability) for the convenience of the user. The application critiques the user’s selected severity classification and offers an explanation for its recommendation. When creating the care plan, PalmAsthma suggests interventions that are appropriate for each treatment step, as described in the guideline.
- After completion of the encounter, the handheld unit is connected to a desktop PC docking station that translates coded data into a format suitable for storage in the central database server. The docking station prepares a printed encounter summary, prescriptions, and individualized patient education handouts.
